Light Demolition in Thurmont, MD

Most of the demolition work we do in Thurmont starts the same way: something in the yard is past saving. A deck with soft boards and a wobbly rail. A shed with a sagging roof that the mower has been parked around for three years. A fence line that came down in a storm and got propped back up. It's one thing that needs to come apart and go away, and the going away is usually the bigger half of the job.

We do light demolition and haul what comes out on the same truck. Taking a deck apart is a day's work; getting four pickup loads of treated lumber to a transfer station is the part people underestimate.

What light demolition covers

  • Decks and deck stairs
  • Sheds, both the wood ones and the resin kits
  • Fences and gates
  • Hot tub surrounds and the pads under them
  • Playsets and swing sets
  • Interior tear-outs: a kitchen taken back to studs, an old bathroom vanity and tile, basement paneling, carpet and padding, built-in shelving, a wall of closets

Concrete walks and small slabs come out too, though concrete and brick carry a higher tipping charge that shows on the quote, because the landfill charges by weight on that material.

Everything that comes out leaves with us unless you want to keep it. If there's lumber or a door or a window you want set aside, say so before we start and it goes in a pile instead of the truck.

What we don't take on

This is light demolition, not structural work. Roof replacement, HVAC work, electrical panel work and tree removal are not services here, and neither is whole-house or load-bearing demolition. If a tear-out turns up something that needs a specialist — a hidden panel, a gas line, a tree that has to come down first — we'll say so instead of taking a swing at it. The property owner pulls any permit that's needed, and most small yard teardowns don't need one.

A deck we took down in Thurmont

A repeat customer asked us in April 2024 for a price to demolish a backyard deck and haul the debris, along with some front-yard work. James (Jay) King was already working in Thurmont that week, so he stopped by in person and sent prices for each piece separately.

The owner did the yard work first and deliberately held the deck back. He didn't want the deck gone and the backyard sitting as a mud pit while he waited on a patio contractor. That was the right call, and it's worth copying if you're clearing space for something else: once the concrete contractor was booked and said he could start as soon as the deck was out, the owner and James set the date around him.

The owners were traveling that week. They moved what they wanted to keep off the deck, left the gate unlocked, and everything else was ours to take apart. Partway through, the owner asked us to pull the wood but leave the bolts in place so the builder doing the new wooden stairs could decide whether to reuse them. We left them. All the lumber and the debris from underneath went out on our truck.

The deck came out in May and the patio went in behind it. In June the owner sent photos of the finished patio and had us back to power wash the house and put down dirt and seed around its edges.

What affects the quote

Size and weight, mostly. A 10x12 deck off the back of a townhouse is a different job from a wrap-around with two sets of stairs. For sheds, what's inside matters more than the shed — one we have to empty first is really two jobs. For interior tear-outs it's how much comes out and how far it's carried, since a basement tear-out means every piece goes up the stairs by hand. Access is the rest of it: a fence we can back a truck up to and a deck behind a locked gate on a narrow lot aren't the same price.

Quotes are free, depend on the size of the job, and usually come back the same day. They're good for 30 days. There's a $100 minimum on any job. Payment by cash, check, card or any payment app.

How long it takes

Most single-item teardowns — one deck, one shed, one fence run — are a day, sometimes two if the debris needs more than one trip. Interior tear-outs depend on how much is coming out and whether you need the space clear by a particular date. Weekend work is available; phones are answered Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.

You don't have to be home. With a lockbox or a code lock and a clear list of what's coming out, the job can run while you're at work — same as that deck did.
