Deck Removal in Frederick, MD
A rotted deck, a deck in the way of a new patio, or one that has to go before a sale. I take it apart, load every piece on my own truck and haul it away in the same job. You get a written price before I start, and the minimum job is $100.
All I can say is “WOW”! They did a demo project at our home. Excellent service: they arrived on time, were very respectful of us and our property, did an outstanding demo job (including clean-up and removal of debris afterward)…
What deck removal involves
Most decks come apart in the reverse order they went up:
- Railings, balusters and stairs come off first
- Deck boards are pulled or cut out
- Joists, beams and posts come down
- The ledger board along the house comes off, and I point out anything on the wall behind it that will need patching
- Lattice skirting, built-in benches and planters go with it
- Whatever has collected underneath the deck can go on the truck too, if you want it gone
Every piece leaves on my truck, and disposal is part of the quoted price. I sweep and rake up the nails and splinters before I leave. If someone is building something new in the same spot, tell me what they want left in place. On one job in Thurmont the owners asked me to leave the bolts for the stair builder, and I did. You can read how that one went in Deck Removal Before a New Patio.
Before I start
Move off anything you want to keep: furniture, grills and planters. If gas or electric runs to the deck, like a grill line or an outdoor outlet, it needs to be disconnected first, by you or the utility. I will point out anything I see when I quote. Light demolition is non-structural work, so I don't take out anything holding up the house. The light demolition page covers the full list.
What affects the quote
There is no per-square-foot price, because two decks the same size can be very different jobs. What I look at:
- Size and height. A low deck on the ground is quicker than a second-story deck with tall posts.
- Stairs, levels and extras. Each set of stairs, a second level, a pergola or built-in seating adds time.
- Access. How close I can park the truck to the deck affects how long it takes to carry everything out.
- What's underneath. Old lumber, toys or junk stored under the deck adds to the load.
- Footings and posts set in concrete. Tell me whether you want them out or left for the next builder.
Send a few photos from different sides and I send back one written price for the whole job, usually the same day.
Do you need a permit?
Frederick County has a demolition permit process, and its information sheet lists what an application asks for. That sheet does not list a size cutoff for small structures, so ask the county before the work starts. Source: Building Permit Information: Demolition (checked October 2026).
If the property is in the City of Frederick or another incorporated town, that town's paperwork comes first. I wrote up what the county publishes, with links, in Shed and Demolition Permits in Frederick County. Before I quote a teardown, I discuss permit requirements with you so any required approvals are in place before work starts.

Questions
Do you haul the debris away too?
Yes. Every board, post and railing goes on my truck in the same job, and disposal is in the written price. I rake up the nails and splinters before I leave.
How much does deck removal cost?
It depends on the size, height, stairs and access, so I quote each deck from photos. The quote is free and in writing, and the minimum job is $100. You pay when the job is done: cash, check, card or app.
Will you take out anything structural?
No. I take down the deck itself, but nothing holding up the house. I don't handle asbestos or other hazardous material either. If gas or electric runs to the deck, it has to be disconnected before I start.
