The Villages of Urbana and Old Urbana

Urbana isn't an incorporated town. A 2006 county planning report notes that the county designated it a growth community in its 1972 Comprehensive Plan, and that it is mostly the Villages of Urbana and Urbana Highlands planned development, plus "Old" Urbana centered along MD 355. The county first approved the Villages of Urbana plan in 1993, and its zoning allows single-family homes, townhouses, live-work units and apartments, with a community association covering the neighborhood. In practice the work here is garages, basements, move-outs and backyard decks and play sets that have reached the end of their life.

How trash and bulk items work in Urbana

  • Frederick County doesn't run trash pickup. Outside an incorporated town, trash goes through your homeowners association or a private hauler you hire.
  • Because Urbana isn't a town, there's no town bulk trash day to wait for. Bulk pickup programs are run by the incorporated towns for residents inside their limits.
  • If you're in an HOA, its hauling contract sets what can go out at the curb. Check with the association before you put furniture or a mattress out.
  • Large appliances can go to the county recycling center on Reichs Ford Road at no charge during business hours.

So a couch, a mattress or a garage full of boxes usually means a borrowed truck or a hauling bill. We load it, haul it and sweep up, on a day that works for you, and you don't need to be home if there's a lockbox or a keypad lock. See junk removal for what we take.

Nearest drop-off

For anything your hauler won't take, the county's site at 9031 Reichs Ford Road is open to residents Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 4:30 PM. Accepted scrap metal and empty appliances go in free at the recycling entrance. Residents can also drop off up to five 30-gallon yard waste bags per day free; loads that carry a fee go through the main entrance. From Urbana it's about 6 miles, roughly 15 minutes. If you have a pickup and a small load, it's an easy run. For a full room or anything heavy, one truckload with us saves the loading and unloading.
