Junk removal guide
What I Take, and What I Don't
Short version: if it is not hazardous and it fits on a truck, I can usually take it. Here is the longer list, plus the few things I leave behind and where they can go instead.
What I take
These are the everyday jobs. One item or a whole house, the process is the same: photos, a written price, then I load it.
- Furniture: couches, recliners, tables, dressers, desks, bed frames and entertainment centers
- Mattresses and box springs
- Appliances: refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and water heaters
- Electronics: TVs, monitors, computers and printers
- Exercise equipment: treadmills, bikes, weight benches
- Yard debris and brush, bagged or loose, plus old grills, patio furniture and play sets
- Construction and renovation leftovers: drywall, lumber, flooring, cabinets, tile and trim
- Sheds, decks, fences and play sets, torn down and hauled in the same job (see light demolition)
- Boxes, bags and general clutter from garages, basements, attics and storage units
Whole-room and whole-house jobs are covered on the move-out cleanouts page, and teardowns on the light demolition page.
What I don't take
I don't haul hazardous material. That means:
- Paint and solvents in liquid form
- Chemicals: pesticides, pool chemicals, cleaners and similar
- Fuel
- Asbestos, or anything that might contain it
- Medical waste
I also don't do tree removal. If something has fuel or oil in it, like a mower or a generator, mention it when you send photos so I can explain what needs to happen before pickup.
Where the hazardous stuff can go
Frederick County runs drop-off options for some of these items, including household hazardous waste collection events and paint drop-off. The details, with links to the county pages, are in my Frederick County landfill guide. I would rather tell you up front than leave a can of solvent sitting in your driveway.
How the day goes
I show up at the agreed time and walk the items with you to confirm what goes. Anything you change your mind about stays put. Then I carry everything out, load it, and sweep up. Disposal fees are already in the written price, so there is no separate dump charge. If some of it is still in good shape and you would like it reused, set it aside for a neighbor or a donation drop-off before I arrive.
Not sure about an item?
Put it in your photos and ask. Most of the time the answer is yes. If it is a no, I will tell you before the job, not when I am standing in your garage.
Questions
Do you take just one item?
Yes. A single couch or an old refrigerator is a normal job. The $100 minimum applies, and you get the price in writing before I load anything.
Do you take old paint?
Not in liquid form. Liquid paint and solvents are on my list of hazardous material I don't haul. Frederick County has drop-off options for paint, and the landfill guide on this site links to them.
Can you take a shed or deck?
Yes. Sheds, fences and play sets are on the light demolition page, and decks have their own deck removal page. Debris is hauled away in the same job.
