Bulk Trash Pickup in Frederick, MD
Whether anyone picks up your old couch for free depends on where you live. Inside City of Frederick limits there is a free annual pickup. In the rest of the county, there is no county program. Here is how each works, with links to the official pages.
Before you go: rules, hours and fees change. Confirm with the county or city using the linked pages before you load the truck.
City of Frederick residents
The City of Frederick gives each household one free bulk item pickup per year, for City of Frederick residents only. Source: Bulk Trash Collection (checked October 2026).
- About ten items per free pickup, and no more than three mattresses or box springs.
- Request it through the city's online form and list the items you are putting out.
- Put the items where your household trash normally goes, at the curb or trash corral.
- Accepted items include furniture, appliances with refrigerants removed, bicycles, electronics, TVs and monitors, grills with tanks removed, large toys, swing sets, and push mowers and trimmers with fluids removed.
- Extra pickups beyond the free one are available for a fee. The city lists 301-600-1377 for those.
The city also runs Freecycle Roundup drop-off events for city residents with proof of residency. The spring 2026 event was April 18 at the Public Works Complex, 111 Airport Drive East, and items had to be under 7 feet long. Check the city page for the next date. Outside city limits
Frederick County government does not provide trash pickup. If you live in a town, contact the town office or your homeowners association; outside a town without an HOA, you use a private trash hauler. Source: Trash Removal (checked October 2026).
The county also has no bulk trash pickup program. Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and stoves can be taken to the recycling center on Reichs Ford Road free of charge, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Source: Bulk Trash FAQ (checked October 2026).
For everything else you drop off yourself, my Frederick County landfill guide covers hours, ID rules, covered loads and the free recycling drop-off.
Tips if you are doing it yourself
Count your items before you request the city pickup, since the form asks you to list them. Take propane tanks off grills and drain the fluids from mowers and trimmers; the city's accepted list requires both. For anything the city won't take, the county drop-off options are in the landfill guide linked above.
When a hauler makes more sense
The free options work well for a few curbside items. They are harder when:
- You have more than the city's item limit, or you already used this year's free pickup.
- The items are upstairs or in a basement and you can't get them to the curb.
- You live outside city limits and don't have a truck.
- You are on a deadline, like a move-out date or a closing.
- It is construction debris, or a shed or deck that has to come down first.
That is the work I do: I carry it out, load it, haul it, and sweep up. See junk removal, what I take and how pricing works.
